License Plate Detection and Reading

YOLOv11 model that detects Peruvian license plates in photos and video, with OCR to read them.

The Challenge

Reading plates in real traffic is hard: plates are small, tilted and often partly hidden. We needed a detector that works on photos and video of Peruvian streets.

Our Solution

We fine-tuned YOLOv11 on labeled images of Peruvian plates and added OCR (Optical Character Recognition) with EasyOCR and Fast Plate OCR to read the characters of each detected plate.

Key Results

mAP50 of 0.986 on the validation set
Precision 0.93 and recall 0.976
Works on both images and video
